Students may now avail of fare discounts during weekends, summer breaks and holidays starting October 28, 2017, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said.
LTFRB issued Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 2017-024 dated October 11 which amended provisions of MC No. 2005-014 that granted fair discount to elderly, disabled person, and students.
The amendment reads as follows:
“Students can avail of the twenty percent (20%) discount from Monday to Sunday including summer breaks, legal and special legal holidays. Post-graduate students (those taking up medicine, law, masteral, doctoral degrees and the like) cannot avail of the said fare discount.”
Previously, student fare discount is only applicable during weekdays.
There’s also a move in Senate to institutionalize that policy. Sen. Sonny Angara filed Senate Bill 945 which seeks to institutionalize the policy which seeks to “lessen the impact of the current economic difficulties and assist students and their parents or guardians in shouldering the transportation expenses relative to the rising cost of education in our country.”
The new memorandum was published in newspaper of general circulation on October 13, and will take effect 15 days after, or on October 28, 2017.
Transport groups have not issued their statement yet on this new measure, but I hope that they will welcome it. I’m sure they also have students in their family which will benefit from it. [Photo credits: https://countrywithinacity.files.wordpress.com]
